Alternative Covers
The covers on this page are alternative
covers -- covers which have appeared in addition to the
covers found on the primary book pages. In general, the
primary book pages have the original cover of the book,
with any alternative covers or covers from later editions
shown on this page. (As a result, there are a whole bunch
of American paperback covers for books originally released
in hardcover. You'll find these down at the end of the
page.) |

THE
MAMMOTH BOOK OF
LOCKED-ROOM
MYSTERIES AND IMPOSSIBLE CRIMES
"A Traveller's Tale" by Margaret Frazer
This cover is only slightly different than the cover which
appears on the Short Stories page.
Unfortunately, I'm not entirely sure where this image came from: It was part
of my old website design, but doesn't match any of the copies of this
collection that I own today. It's possible that this was a pre-press design
of the cover that never actually saw print.

THE BISHOP'S TALE
This alternative cover was used for the
February 2007 reprinting of the French edition of The
Bishop's Tale (Le Conte de
l'évêque). It is in a style more keeping with the
covers used for the French editions of The Boy's Tale
(Le Conte des deux frères) and The Murderer's
Tale (Le conte de l'assassin). The original
cover, which was done in a style matching the first
three books in the series, can be seen on the homepage
for the French editions. Buy

THE NOVICE'S TALE
This cover was the second cover used for
the German edition of The
Novice's Tale (Die Novizin). The first five
German translations had covers which used stylizied
woodcuts - some of them Medieval, some of them decidedly
not. The style then shifted rapidly in three different
directions for the sixth, seventh, and eighth books: The
sixth always looks to me like Harry Potter facing off
against a dementor. The seventh cover makes the book look like a
historical romance set in the 18th century. And the eighth
has a very tasteful portrait of a nun.
This alternative cover, on the other hand,
has no resemblance to any of them. It most closely
resembles the early editions of the French
translations.

THE SERVANT'S TALE
This cover was used for the July 2002
reprint of the German edition of
The Servant's Tale (Die Magd). This reprint
came out shortly after the German edition of The Prioress'
Tale (Der Priorin) came out, and, to my eye,
bears a close resemblance to that cover.

THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF
LOCKED-ROOM MYSTERIES AND IMPOSSIBLE CRIMES
My short story "A Traveller's
Tale" first appeared in The Mammoth Book of
Locked-Room Mysteries and Impossible Crimes, a Mike
Ashley anthology, in 2000. The entire collection was then
licensed and translated into Thai.
Perhaps the most mysterious thing about
this collection is the cover itself: The faintly
luminescent keys of the typewriter very clearly identify
it as a QWERTY typewriter... and yet, somehow, it has
produced a passage of multi-colored Thai. How is that even
possible?
Alas, we will probably never know. A
locked-room mystery may have some solution, but a magical
typewriter is beyond the ken of this author. |

PAPERBACK COVER FLATS |
Cover flats are generally produced as
promotional material. As the name suggests, they are
literally the flat version of the book's cover --
including the front cover, the spine, and the back
cover. Essentially, flats are covers which have not been
used to bind an actual book. Publishers will send these
out to distributors and bookstores before the book is
actually published, usually as part of a larger
publicity packet designed to encourage early orders on
the title. As an author I usually, but not always,
receive a few copies as well. I'm never entirely certain
what to do with them, but they seem to exert a certain
fascination on those who are not already familiar with
this aspect of the publishing industry. As such, they
tend to serve as interesting conversation pieces. I'm
not entirely sure that their mystique is preserved when
translated into a digital format, but on the off-chance
that they will serve as at least a curiosity to some you
will find them below.
You may notice the occasional difference between
these flats and the final versions of the covers. Most
notable is that the original intention for The
Servant's Tale was a rather remarkable orange. I
count myself rather blessed that this was changed at the
last minute to a far more pleasant blue.
